Chapter 9

Lee lay there staring into the darkness. He’d gone through his routine and checked the locks on the front door, then checked all the rooms and closets, and finally locked himself into his bedroom. Still, he couldn’t sleep.

He turned to his side and reached for Jake. Although he could hear his steady breath, he needed to touch him to know he was really there.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked Lee and met his hand halfway.

“No. You?”

“No.” He reached over and turned on the lamp. They both squinted from the intrusion and sat up in bed, leaning back against the headboard. Jake looked at Lee and sighed. “Is it really that bad for you?”

Lee nodded, ashamed that his fear still had a strong hold on him. He thought finding his attacker and confronting him would somehow act as a dam, releasing him from his torment as it broke. Instead, he ended up sleeping with him and found himself falling hard, which scared him even more.

“What can I do?”

“Reverse time,” Lee muttered and rested his forehead on his knees. The feel of Jake’s hand on his back relaxed him, but not enough for him to find any peace.

“You don’t know how badly I wish I could. I can’t undo what I did, Lee. I’m not Superman who can reverse the Earth’s rotation and bring back Lois Lane.”

“And yet you take on the world’s burdens as if they’re your own.” He lifted his head and looked at Jake, saw the spark of irritation in his eyes. Lee knew it wasn’t him triggering Jake’s temper. Something else had him tighter than stretched leather in the sun.

“I take them on because no one else will.”

“But they aren’t yours.”

“Someone’s got to be that guy.”

“But why you?”

Jake forced his fingers through his hair as his frustration grew. Lee knew how to push his buttons and also knew it would take Jake blowing before he’d open up. “Because I do.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re going to get.” He threw the covers back and grabbed his pants, thrusting his legs in before storming over to the door. When he tried to throw it back, he ran up against all the locks and growled as he rested his forehead against the door.

“Why won’t you give me a straight answer?”

“Why do you keep pushing it?”

Lee swung around and put his feet on the floor. He reached down and grabbed his PJ bottoms to slip them on. “Something has you pissed all the time, Jake. It isn’t healthy.”

“But this is?” He rattled the door and the locks shivered, sending a round of metallic clinks into the tense air.

“So I’m scared all the time and you’re ready to kill someone. What are we going to do about it?”

Jake whipped around, that fire burning in his eyes. “We aren’t going to do a goddamn thing. If I want to take on the world’s burdens, then that’s my business. Don’t pretend to know me.”

That hurt. Lee stood as he sucked in a breath, his anger now threatening to take over.
